Present and past problems affecting Uganda

CHILD ABUSE AND EARLY MARRIAGE

Child abuse and early marriage is a global problem affecting millions of girls and boys across the world and particularly troublesome here in Uganda. It is considered a human right violation because it deprives those involved of education, health services, the chance to learn skills and the ability to develop their personalities.

"It leaves them vulnerable and is an appalling violation of human rights and robs girls and boys of their education, health and long-term project opportunities," says John Borish Ongom, Principal Director, Otubet Youth United Development Organization (OYUDO).

Despite of the physical damage and persistent discrimination to young girls and boys, little progress has been made towards ending the practice of child abuse and early marriages.

These issues here in Uganda are commonly caused by increasing levels of poverty, low levels of education, long-standing cultural and traditional beliefs and war. The problem threatens to increase with the expanding youth population and we are trying to change and inspire young people to have a better life.

We aim to assist less privileged children and youth acquire educations at all levels, carry out pastoral work, address health sanitation and hygiene issues, provide guidance and counseling and promote sustainable economic solutions.
